چکیده

Statistical analysis of the relative alignment of inner and outer orbits in triple systems resulting from a dynamical decay of small-N clusters (N ≤ 10) is presented and compared to the statistics of real multiple stars. The distribution of the relative angle Φ between the angular momentum vectors of inner and outer orbits in triple stars formed by decay is shown to depend on the initial cluster conditions like geometry, mass function, rotational and thermal energy. For a realistic set of initial conditions, a modest alignment of orbital momentum vectors is found, in good agreement with the latest observational data on visual multiple stars exhibiting an average 〈Φ〉 between 67◦ and 79◦. The relation between eccentricities of outer orbits and period ratios for both simulated and real triples is consistent with a slightly adjusted formulation of the stability criterium by Mardling & Aarseth (2001). Dynamical decay can therefore explain the weak correlation of orbital orientations observed in multiple stars. Using modern high-resolution techniques, the observed statistics of Φ should be extended as it will allow one to sensitively constrain properties of initial clusters.

Orbits, Distance, and Stellar Masses of the Massive Triple Star Σ Orionis

We present interferometric observations of the σ Orionis triple system using the CHARA Array, NPOI, and VLTI. Using these measurements, we spatially resolve the orbit of the close spectroscopic binary (Aa,Ab) for the first time and present a revised orbit for the wide pair (A,B). Combining the visual orbits with previously published radial velocity measurements and new radial velocities measure...

Fuzzy Sliding Mode for Spacecraft Formation Control in Eccentric Orbits

The problem of relative motion control for spacecraft formation flying in eccentric orbits is considered in this paper. Due to the presence of nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances, a robust fuzzy sliding mode controller is developed. The slopes of sliding surfaces of the conventional sliding mode controller are tuned according to error states using a fuzzy logic and reach the pre-define...

Studies of multiple stellar systems – IV . The triple - lined spectroscopic system Gliese 644

We present a radial-velocity study of the triple-lined system Gliese 644 and derive spectroscopic elements for the inner and outer orbits with periods of 2.9655 and 627 days. We also utilize old visual data, as well as modern speckle and adaptive optics observations, to derive a new astrometric solution for the outer orbit. These two orbits together allow us to derive masses for each of the thr...

Orbital Evolution in Binary and Triple Stars, with an application to SS Lac

Abstract: We present equations governing the way in which both the orbit and the intrinsic spins of stars in a close binary should evolve subject to a number of perturbing forces, including the effect of a third body in a possibly inclined wider orbit. We illustrate the solutions in some binary-star and triple-star situations: tidal friction in a wide but eccentric orbit of a radio pulsar about...

Behavior of Apsidal Orientations in Planetary Systems

A widely considered characteristic of extra-solar planetary systems has been a seeming tendency for major axes of adjacent orbits to librate in stable configurations. Based on a new catalog of extra-solar planets (Butler et al. 2006) and our numerical integrations, we find that such small amplitude oscillations are actually not common, but in fact quite rare; most pairs of planets’ major axes a...
